RANT: Is Star Wars making too many different TV shows on Disney+?

I don’t know if it’s a matter of quality over quantity, or if I’m just being that guy. The one who can’t just let these fiendish corporations do their thing, ie cultivating a thirsty cult of fanboys who wants Star Wars flooding their eyes, nose, ears and mouth (and other orifices too!) for all of eternity. It’s their approach to this that is just exhausting. For starters, these announcements are for investors. It’s to show shareholders that they are going to blue milk the franchise absolutely dry to make as much profit as possible because that is literally the American way and in some ways it would be illegal for them not to do this. But as a fan (even one who kicks himself every time I see how much Disney Stock is worth), it does ruin the magic to see how the sausage is made. It looks like they took a bunch of writers, directors and producers, sat them around a table and had them pick Star Wars words out of a hat. Rogue One is one of my favourite Star Wars movies. Ranting Review: How the Mandalorian brought me back into the Star Wars fold

I am surprised and yet not surprised by how much I actually enjoyed season 1 of the Mandalorian. I’m not surprised because the trailers for the show were mesmerizing. I am surprised because I can’t put my finger on what it is about the show that works so well for me. I usually like complex, dark exercises in world-building. I like a movie that’s a little bit up its own ass with philosophy whether that is well done or not. I like a terrifying, sinister villain with motives that stick with you long after you’ve finished watching. I guess the word I’m looking for is “epic”. And the Mandalorian is none of those things. It’s a simple western with a sci-fi twist that sweeps you up in the fun, gunslinging action so effectively that it was probably weeks after the finale before I asked myself, “Why do the bad guys want Baby Yoda anyway?” And this was what was at the core of Star Wars in the beginning. Movie Review: Tenet is some kind of something

A few weeks ago I watched Wall-E and as is often the case with Pixar movies, it ended with me crying. It’s a simple, high concept, character driven science fiction story that gets you high on emotion . The plot itself is straightforward: ( spoilers for Wall-E) find the plant and bring it to a part of the spaceship that will signal humanity’s return to earth. As a movie, Tenet moves in a direction opposite to Wall-E. Tons of plot with very little emotion. Tenet scratches an entirely different itch and I loved every moment of it. It’s a brain movie, not a heart movie, although even then, it’s not saying anything truly profound. What’s really exciting about this movie and Nolan in general, is it’s an opportunity to see something completely new. It’s not a sequel, a prequel, a Marvel or a DC. It’s a new concept, a completely original take on a sci-fi concept and that alone makes it my favourite movie of the year so far.
