Movie Review: Tenet is some kind of something

A few weeks ago I watched Wall-E and as is often the case with Pixar movies, it ended with me crying. It’s a simple, high concept, character driven science fiction story that gets you high on emotion . The plot itself is straightforward: ( spoilers for Wall-E) find the plant and bring it to a part of the spaceship that will signal humanity’s return to earth. As a movie, Tenet moves in a direction opposite to Wall-E. Tons of plot with very little emotion. Tenet scratches an entirely different itch and I loved every moment of it. It’s a brain movie, not a heart movie, although even then, it’s not saying anything truly profound. What’s really exciting about this movie and Nolan in general, is it’s an opportunity to see something completely new. It’s not a sequel, a prequel, a Marvel or a DC. It’s a new concept, a completely original take on a sci-fi concept and that alone makes it my favourite movie of the year so far. Much has been made about how complicated the movie is and for som...

RANT: I like movie posters

I’ve always loved the movie posters for the Matrix reloaded. High contrast pictures that cut off most of the character’s faces so you can gawk at the wonderfully over the top cyberpunk costumes. I like how Neo’s and Morpheus’ coats flare out like super-hero capes. I love the twins. It’s like they’re posing for panels in a comic book. I truly love these posters and back when anticipation for the Matrix sequel was an all consuming obsession for nerds like me, I could just stare at them wondering why (most versions of the posters) cut off the top of their heads? Was their some deep meaning behind them? A symbol that what we’re looking at are avatars and that their minds are actually somwhere else? Thematically, are we being reminded that these characters are victims of the engineered fatalism of the Matrix? Wachowskis wanted us to believe that everything about these movies, games and ancillary anime cartoons was part of some larger puzzle. That turned out not to be the case and the ...

Why Falcon and Winter Soldier can have all my money OR How I gave in and learned to be a comliant Marvel fanboy

Every time Marvel announces a new project, I think I go into a bit of a contrarian mode, roll my eyes and moan that we're doing ANOTHER Marvel thing. Speaking of Captain America, I'm so excited for Falcon and Winter Soldier I just peed my pants. Isn't it supposed to be the most watched trailer since the last trailer of a thing that Disney released? Yeah, those views were all me watching it on a loop. So far, Disney's transition into streaming has been enjoyable. Wandavision is just delightful, isn't it? And the Mandalorian? *chef kiss* The production value of these streaming shows is just through the roof and there's a good chance I may never leave my house again. Take note, Warner Bros. I love Chris Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and yes, even Zach Snyder (don't @ me!), but if I can watch all their wonderful goodness from the comfort of my home without being up to my eyebrows in the covid infected masses, I will take that option any day of the week.
