I just wanted to say, I really enjoyed the first episode of season 3 of Picard. So much so, I'm almost afraid to go on. It feels like the sequel to the series that I've always wanted. Yes, it leads with somewhat pandering nostalgia bait. The characters, the diegetic and non-diegetic elements of the show, all seem to just scream at you: "Remember the theme from First Contact? Remember the Enterprise D? Remember the Enterprise A? Remember Star Trek 2 and 3? And Star Trek 6, I guess? Please remember how much you love Star Trek!" I remember, Picard Season 3. And I'm embarrassed to say how easily your pandering worked on me. How often have we left spacedock with Kirk and the crew? They recreate it here in a way that's charming and fun. The Titan looks like a constitution class Starship. Who cares? Me, I guess! The awkward dinner with Captain Jerk was reminiscent of the dinner in the Undiscovered Country, from which the show seems to be drawing a lot of its inspirat...

Movie Review: Tenet is some kind of something

A few weeks ago I watched Wall-E and as is often the case with Pixar movies, it ended with me crying. It’s a simple, high concept, character driven science fiction story that gets you high on emotion . The plot itself is straightforward: ( spoilers for Wall-E) find the plant and bring it to a part of the spaceship that will signal humanity’s return to earth. As a movie, Tenet moves in a direction opposite to Wall-E. Tons of plot with very little emotion. Tenet scratches an entirely different itch and I loved every moment of it. It’s a brain movie, not a heart movie, although even then, it’s not saying anything truly profound. What’s really exciting about this movie and Nolan in general, is it’s an opportunity to see something completely new. It’s not a sequel, a prequel, a Marvel or a DC. It’s a new concept, a completely original take on a sci-fi concept and that alone makes it my favourite movie of the year so far. Much has been made about how complicated the movie is and for som...

RANT: A New Dune Movie?

Seems to check all the boxes. Classic novel? Check. Denis Villeneuve? Check. Fantastic cast? Check. Through the roof production value? Check. The novel Dune is considered something the crown jewel of science fiction. Frank Herbert blends politics, ecology and religion into an engrossing and entertaining space opera. It was way ahead of its time. It’s everything that’s good about Star Trek and Star Wars rolled into one. What the hell, throw in Game of Thrones for good measure. The problem is, they haven’t been able to make a good movie out of it yet. The David Lynch adaptation (1984) was universally panned by critics and contains cringe worthy moments like Sting in a speedo. There was a miniseries, which didn’t fare much better critically, back in the year 2000. And there have also been a few failed attempts at making adaptations in between.
